(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago Ald. Rossana Rodriguez has upset some members of the Italian American community with a Tweet asking people, “What’s the best way to honor Italian Heritage in Chicago?”
A poll was posted on Rodriguez’s political Twitter page, not the official page used by her 33rd Ward office. Her suggestions included a Columbus statute or monuments to Italian ice or Bialetti, which is the name of a prized brand of coffee machines.
Her tweet invited people to offer their own ideas.
They did. Ron Onesti is not amused.
The president of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans says Rodriguez is supposed to represent all members of the community. Instead, he argues, “she has flippantly mocked our ethnic group” by seemingly encouraging cheeky suggestions such as “Giardiniera fountain.”
Onesti said you couldn’t do this kind of thing with other ethnic groups.
WBBM Newsradio has reached out to Rodriguez for a response.
