CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Joliet residents can learn more Wednesday about the suburb’s massive water main replacement project that’s slated to begin later this month.

Deputy director of engineering for the city’s public utilities department Tony Anczer said they’re planning to replace 20 miles of water mains each year.

"So by the time we reach the end of 2030, all the city's water mains that were put in the ground before 1970 will have been replaced," Anczer told WBBM Newsradio.

While most residents won’t notice a difference when they switch to Lake Michigan water in 2030, others may.

"Residents may notice an increase in pressure in some areas who were in this project. We're also addressing areas that have deadend water mains,” Anczer continued.

Letters are going out to 2,400 homes and businesses that will be affected by water cutoffs and road closures during the project. The department is hosting an open house from 5-7 p.m. at the Eastside Water Treatment Plant.
