(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Joliet says it plans to take action to shutdown group housing for sex offenders in the Cunningham neighborhood.
The city of Joliet said in a statement it plans to take legal action to minimize the presence of sex offenders in the community. The city has announced its formal opposition to the sex offender housing in the 1000 block of Cora Street where five convicted sex offenders live.
Mayor Bob O’DeKirk said it’s absurd to think that anyone at any level of government would think this is a good idea. The city believes the owner of the property has a contract with the state Department of Corrections to house the sex offenders.
“This goes to the heart of the matter that Joliet has become a dumping ground for Will County communities," said City Manager, Jim Capparelli in a statement.
"This has got to stop, and I will be seeking a moratorium on the expansion of existing social services housing located in Joliet.”
