CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A federal jury found Timothy Mapes, a political insider and longtime chief of staff to former House Speaker Michael Madigan, guilty on Thursday of repeatedly lying to a grand jury that was looking into his former boss.

The jury deliberated for about five hours hours before returning guilty verdicts on all charges in the case against Mapes, who worked for Madigan for over 25 years before being fired in a sexual harassment scandal.

Mapes, who’s 68 years old, could face as much as 25 years behind bars.

Thursday’s decision made Mapes the second person with close ties to Madigan to be convicted in a federal court in the past few months.

In May, another member of Madigan’s inner circle — Michael McClain — was found guilty by a federal jury in a bribery conspiracy case. McClain was one of four individuals accused of getting Madigan cronies do-nothing jobs with ComEd. In return, the four worked to sway Madigan to make decisions that would benefit the utility company.

Madigan will be on trial in the spring of 2024 for racketeering charges and accusations that Madigan led a “criminal enterprise” that was designed to enhance his political power and generate income for his allies and associates.
