WESTMONT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A juvenile faces felony charges in DuPage County in connection with an burglary at a high-end car dealership in Westmont on New Year’s Eve.

Officials said the juvenile had to be hospitalized after being shot by a police officer while driving a stolen getaway car at an officer at Laurel BMW on New Year’s Eve.

Prosecutors said the young person and Angel Martin, 23 of Dolton used a pry bar and a landscaping rock to get into the dealership. When police arrived during the burglary, the pair is said to have left the building and jumped into a waiting stolen car which had two other people in it.

The car later crashed and all four people were arrested. The three others had been previously charged.

“Every day, law enforcement officers face the dangerous unknown of whether or not they will be forced to fire their service weapon in performance of their duty,” Westmont Police Chief Jim Gunther said in a statement.

“On the last day of the year, 2021, one of our officers had to make that difficult decision. We are all very grateful that none of our officers were injured that evening."

However, the DuPage County MERIT Public Integrity Task Force and Forensic Investigation Unit is investigating the officer's discharge of his firearm.
