KANKAKEE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Kankakee man is now accused of being a "straw-purchaser" for the gun that was used to kill a police sergeant.
Jaron Shannon, 23 was arrested Thursday. He's one of eight people facing charges in the 2021 shooting death of officer Marlene Rittmanic of the Bradley Police Department.
A 'straw-purchaser" is someone who purchases a gun for someone who is prohibited by law from owning a gun or does not want their name associated with the transaction.
"We know all too well the consequences of firearms falling into the hands of those who should not possess them," said Jim Rowe, Kankakee County State’s Attorney.
"In fact, many of the firearms purchased by Jaron Shannon have been used by others in the commission of a crime, including a juvenile offender."
