(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A veteran librarian with the Chicago Public Schools says she has mixed feelings about landing a job at a new school, after her position was cut at her old school.
In June, Noral Wiltse lost her librarian position of 14 years at Coonley Elementary School in the North Center neighborhood, supposedly because of budget cuts.
Wiltse has just been hired as the librarian at King College Prep on the South Side and will reopen the library there; it has been closed for years.
“It’s not a win, right? Because one school that didn’t have a librarian now has one and one school that had a librarian now doesn’t have one,” she said.
In a written statement, CPS officials said the decision on libraries is left up to principals, who can best decide where to allocate resources for the students at their schools.
Wiltse is calling on CPS to return to its policy prior to 2012, when she says all public schools in the city had libraries.
