CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A mask mandate may return to Lake County, Indiana.
Lake County Health Officer Dr. Chandana Vavilala told the county council she's working with the Lake County Board of Health to develop policies aimed at reducing the growing number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
She said the board so far has not reached an agreement on precisely what steps to take.
But when they do, county board approval will be sought, which is required by state law.
According to the Northwest Indiana Times, Vavilala said, "The idea of public health is we want to do prevention. We don't want to put out the fires, we want to prevent the fires."
The paper reported she’s likely to find support among the five Democrats and two Republicans to impose a new mask mandate if she requests one.
