CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thursday was the birthday of one of the nation's best known and most celebrated police dogs.
K-9 Dax is frequently in the news in the north suburbs for helping the Lake County Sheriff's Department catch criminals on the run, find lost children, and with other amazing feats of tracking.
Dax has received several honors, including American Humane's "Hero Dog Award."
The German shepherd is now 7, which technically makes him a senior, but Lake County Sheriff's Lieutenant Christopher Covelli said Dax is nowhere near retirement.
For example, when his human partner Deputy John Forlenza has to leave Dax at home.
"Dax will sit by the door crying and whining wanting to get into the car with John. He knows that John has left for work and left him behind. Dax desperately enjoys going to work every single day," said Covelli.
While police departments are increasingly adopting technology such as drones, Covelli said police dogs such as Dax have unique abilities that current tech can't match.
Covelli said that means police will be relying on dogs such as Dax for many years to come.
