(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Renters in Lake County who faced financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic may qualify for help from the new Lake County Rental Assistance program.
Through the program, Lake County — along with its community partners — will administer $6 million in rental assistance to help families stay in their homes as they continue to recover from the pandemic.
Those eligible for the program may receive up to six months of rental assistance.
According to Lake County’s website, a person must meet all of the following requirements to qualify:
-Be a renter in Lake County
-Be at risk of homelessness or housing instability
-Experienced a financial hardship during the pandemic
Examples of financial hardship include being laid off, furloughed, or having hours reduced at work. It could also apply to people who had to reduce their working hours in order to care for a child, or if someone incurred significant costs due to COVID-19, such as medical bills.
In addition to currently experiencing homelessness, the county said examples of housing instability include receiving a past due rent or utility notice, an eviction notice, or merging households due to an inability to afford rent.
Lake County officials also noted that other circumstances may apply. Individuals were encouraged to call 211 with any questions regarding eligibility.
The program will be accepting applications through Nov. 15.
