(WBBM Newsradio) — Lake County Illinois health officials are in the middle of an investigation involving a rabid dog that was flown into O’Hare International Airport earlier this month.

More than 30 dogs from Azerbaijan were imported by an international animal rescue group. One was transferred to Pennsylvania, where it later tested positive for rabies.

The concern has shifted to the other dogs that were potentially exposed. Locally, that includes four dogs that made a stop in Lake County.

Health officials say two of the canines are being examined and quarantined for 45 days. The two others were in other states.

Officials are reminding people to avoid feeding or touching wild animals. Pet owners should make sure their animals are vaccinated.

Dog rabies has effectively been eliminated in the United States since 2007, Lake County reports. Now, there is a temporary suspension that prohibits the entry of dogs into the United States from 113 high-risk countries.
