CHESTERTON, IND (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There were blizzard conditions in northern Porter and LaPorte Counties, in Northwest Indiana this morning, making travel treacherous.
Drivers experienced white out conditions in both counties, where roads are snow-packed and Indiana State Police dealt with numerous crashes and vehicles off the roads.
That includes a number of semis. State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said trucks with empty trailers are especially vulnerable with the strong wind.
“Stay home, stay warm,” Fifield advised. What a perfect day to get ready for your Christmas dinner or whatever is, feel free to bake some cookies and let me know where they are going to be. This is not a day to be out venturing around just checking the roads to see if they’re as bad as we say they are because that’s when bad things can happen. Take our word for it, if you don’t have to travel, don’t."
Members of the National Guard, called up by the governor, have been assisting police on the roads, Fifield said, in some instances, getting people to hotels to wait it out.
