CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Landlords and their interest advocates say it's time to think about ending the moratorium on evictions.
Gov. JB Pritzker, speaking in Aurora on Monday, said officials are thinking about the issue.
Corey Oliver owns and manages apartment buildings on Chicago’s South and West sides. He stressed that landlords like him are not looking to evict good tenants struggling because of the pandemic.
He said about 60% of his tenants are behind in rent and keep in touch. Another 12% haven’t paid a dime since COVID-19 set in and avoid all contact with his office.
Oliver wants the state to allow his company to evict the most egregious offenders.
Pritzker said he anticipates more federal aid to help renters pay their bills but didn’t give a timetable.
The governor said normal eviction processes may be allowed again. For now, he said, he expects more rental assistance like what we saw last year.
Under the system, he explained, tenants and landlords fill out requests online and the money goes directly to the property owner, not the renter.
