CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago City Council committee has rejected a proposed ordinance that would create a landmark district for the Pilsen neighborhood.
City officials said landmarking the buildings and cultural icons in the largely Mexican-American community would help preserve its character. But Ald. Byron Sigcho Lopez said business owners and residents feared the measure raise taxes and restoration costs and end up displacing them.
Chicago Planning and Development Commissioner Maurice Cox had argued for the change, but acknowledged the opposition.
“We heard from a very robust portion of the community that the district designation was not perceived to be in their best interests,” Cox said.
