CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Latino community leaders are reaching out to Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson for reassurances that their interests will be among his high priorities as he takes office.
Under the banner of the Illinois Latino Agenda, 26 leaders from Latino organizations have written a letter to Brandon Johnson congratulating him on his victory and stressing the needs of their communities.
Jose Muñoz, CEO of La Casa Norte, said the message is: “Congratulations, and don’t forget us.” He said as the transition goes forward they want a seat at the table.
“Elections are tough, and right now (is) the time to rebuild and rebuild relationships and bring the city together, so we are offering to support him any way we can,” Muñoz said.
But, he also said they want to see an emphasis on community development and Chicago as a sanctuary city.
“We have to have a plan. We have a whole community of new individuals who have arrived to Chicago. And, we want to make sure that they’re receiving the support services that they need in order to be able to thrive, because if they thrive, we all thrive. They’re a part of our city now and part of our communities,” Muñoz added.
The leaders also want equitable Latino representation in the Mayor’s Office itself.
Among other areas of concern are community development, youth violence prevention and the city’s plans as a welcoming city.
