(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois lawmakers just may make their goal of clarifying the Safe T Act and ending cash bail in the state on Jan. 1, after all.
State Sen. Robert Peters, D-Chicago, says the amendment to the package’s Pretrial Fairness Act, which he introduced late Tuesday, is expected to get votes in both chambers on Thursday.
If approved, the revision would go to Gov. JB Pritzker.
The most controversial component of the Safe-T Act ends cash bail for non-violent offenders, but prosecutors and judges could keep several types of pretrial defendants behind bars.
Critics say gaps in the legislation will effectively spring dangerous criminals. Even proponent Pritzker said lawmakers should close any potential loopholes.
