CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Wednesday said the alarming rise in coronavirus cases in Wisconsin comes from playing politics with public health.
Wisconsin’s Democratic governor announced plans to build a field hospital to handle a crush of coronavirus hospitalizations. Gov. Tony Evers previously sought to impose COVID-related safeguards to halt the virus’s spread, but he was met with resistance from Republican lawmakers and the state’s high court.
Wisconsin’s “positivity rate” is pushing 20% — far above the Illinois rate of 3.5%.
Lightfoot said the surge in Wisconsin is a “disgrace.” The state is considered a hot spot of infection and is on the city’s emergency travel order. Anyone coming in from that state and staying or returning to Chicago is expected to self-isolated for 14 days.
"I fear for the safety of Wisconsin," Lightfoot said.
Another neighboring state, Indiana, could be placed on the so-called Chicago quarantine list next week.
