CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the city is taking steps to prevent an intentional destruction of COVID-19 vaccine doses, as happened in Wisconsin last month.
Mayor Lightfoot said she was very concerned when authorities arrested a Wisconsin hospital pharmacist for allegedly spoiling 500 doses of coronavirus vaccine last month.
"You might imagine as soon as I heard that case is call Dr. Arwady and say what security do we have?" she said.
"There are protocols in place, and I don't want to get into all the security protocols that we have here, but look the reality is if someone has an agenda, as this individual did, and does not care about the sanctity of life, as he clearly didn't, is intent on doing something, even the most rigorous protocols are going to be challenged to stop that."
She believes the man had mental health issues, and said when someone like that has access to vital medicine and ill intentions, it's a challenge to stop them.
"What I have read is, both vaccine companies have said heating it up at room temperature does not cause any physical harm or injury, but obviously believe me that was one of the first questions I started asking about what our security protocols are. I am confident we have the right controls in place," Lightfoot said.
But she said Wisconsin's is a cautionary tale.
