(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With just days to go before the election, incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot is firmly touting her administration's efforts to being down crime.
Public safety has remained the number one issue throughout the mayoral campaign season.
And Lightfoot readily acknowledges many people in Chicago are scared to be on the streets because of the gangs and guns.
But she points to statistics showing a reduction in the rates of violent crime, even if the perception among residents suggests a different story.
The mayor tells WBBM Newsradio that the spike in violent crime is a nationwide phenomenon.
She is facing a field of eight opponents in the Feb. 28 election, which could lead to a runoff in April.
Lightfoot is the guest on “At Issue,” which will air 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
