(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A city report shows about two-thirds of Chicago Police vehicle chases at one time ended in crashes, but Mayor Lightfoot said many changes have been made.
Lightfoot said vehicle chases were among the first problem areas she noticed at the Chicago Police Department.
In fact, she says, in the five years before she took office the city paid out $100 million in damages and settlements following accidents.
“There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for how pursuits were handled,” Lightfoot said Thursday.
Sixty-six percent of such chases once ended in crashes, but no more, the mayor said, thanks to policy adjustments.
“We’ve seen a drop in those kinds of pursuits, and certainly we’ve seen a drop in the number of injuries, loss of life, officers being out on injury,” Lightfoot said.
There’s still more to do. CPD is also working on revamping its foot pursuit policy, another problem area.
