(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With Lollapalooza opening on Thursday — and with the numbers of COVID-19 cases continuing to rise — Mayor Lightfoot says she has no second thoughts about green-lighting the music festival.

Lightfoot on Monday said she doesn’t have “any hesitation” about the Grant Park concert because the organizers have been very focused on public health and public safety.

“The other thing I think to keep in mind is: It’s outside,” she said. “And that makes a difference. We know now for a year-plus that the danger of transmission is less outside than it is inside.”

On a related topic, the mayor was asked if she is considering reinstating a mask mandate for indoor settings.

“We are not in a danger area, based upon the metrics that we follow. But I do think it’s smart for people to wear masks. When you’re in a group, you don’t know who’s vaccinated or not,” she said.

Mayor Lightfoot made her comments in North Lawndale, where she announced a $500,000 grant to neighborhoods from Showtime, the producers of the Chicago-based series, “The Chi.”
