CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot sees the glass as half-full when it comes to in-person attendance at CPS schools this term.
District figures show that fewer than half of Chicago Public Schools students have chosen to return to their classrooms in the 4th quarter this spring. For the high school students alone, that number falls to about a third opting for in-person learning.
But, Mayor Lightfoot said she’s not concerned or surprised.
"What was key to me is making sure that we gave a pathway back for those parents and students that wanted to come back to in-person learning. That may not be the best option for everyone, but I think 50 percent is a pretty good mark," she said.
Lightfoot said when you look deeper into those numbers, you see that most of the students who are coming back are students of color; and they were a major reason for working to get the classrooms open again.
"I think we made significant progress," she said.
CPS officials hope to start bringing high school students back in mid-April, assuming an agreement is worked out with the Chicago Teachers Union.
