(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot treaded carefully Wednesday when asked about businessman Willie Wilson’s latest gasoline giveaway but agreed people are hurting from high prices at the pump.
Wilson, a former mayoral candidate, has planned another gas giveaway for Thursday morning. He’ll give away $1 million in fuel across dozens of Chicago gas stations. He and organizers say they learned from last week’s $200,000 gas giveaway, which caused traffic jams, and that problems should be ironed out this time.
Lightfoot neither endorsed the activity nor commented on any resulting problems, when pressed by reporters Wednesday about Wilson. But she acknowledged that people need the help.
“When gas surges in the way that it has and so quickly — they’re certainly not getting a boost in their wages to accommodate that surge,” Lightfoot said, referring to consumers.
The mayor told reporters her administration is planning some measure of its own to provide long-term relief.
