(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot has chosen the former head of the Elgin school district as the interim head of Chicago Public Schools.

Formerly with Elgin — and most recently, president of the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora — Jose Torres was two days into his retirement from that job. Now, he has been chosen as interim CEO for CPS.

Mayor Lightfoot introduced Torres at a Southwest Side middle school, where she railed against the Legislature’s attempts to approve an elected 21-person school board for Chicago. She said it’s a process she says would discriminate against non-citizens.

“Don’t send a message to our immigrant and refugee communities that they don’t matter by disenfranchising them now, in this moment,” she said.

The mayor says Torres will begin serving as interim CEO on July 1, as the search goes on for a permanent CEO.
