CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Tuesday pleaded with the Trump Administration and the incoming Biden Administration to expedite distribution of coronavirus vaccines.
Lightfoot said Chicago has already used 95% of the COVID-19 vaccine it has received, which generally has gone to frontline medical workers.
Many more doses are needed from the federal government, which must move quicker if it wishes to bend the curve of new infections.
“At the current rate that we are going it would take us almost a year and a half to vaccinate all of Chicago,” the mayor said. “That is way too long and frankly, unacceptable.”
Lightfoot made her remarks as some Chicago vaccine recipients received their second doses of a two-dose regimen.
Two federally approved vaccines are being pushed out, but reports indicate there is a bottleneck in some areas of the U.S. Reasons include all of the special hardware needed to store vaccine and a the need for more qualified professionals to administer the doses.
