CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police said an alleged robber was shot as he stole a person’s cell phone in Lincoln Park Tuesday night.

Authorities said an unidentified male suspect approached a 21-year-old man in the 1600 block of West Fullerton Avenue about 8:20 p.m.

The suspect then reached for the victim’s handgun, which police said was on his waistband. Chicago police said the weapon discharged and the offender appeared to have been shot in the leg.

Despite suffering the gunshot wound, the suspect allegedly still demanded the victim’s phone.

Police said the suspect fled the scene after the victim handed over the phone.

The victim was not injured.

No one was in custody, police said.

Area Two detectives are investigating.
