(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The director of a watchdog organization says ComEd’s request for a rate increase should be rejected.

The rate increase would be $199 million should it be allowed to go through, which is one million short of what the utility had to pay for the bribery scandal.

Abe Scar is the Director of the Illinois Public Interest Research Group.

"It's the biggest rate hike they've had since 2014 and it's the last rate hike under their Formula Rate system, which is what they want in 2011-the first big law that was passed during their bribery scheme and over time with this rate increase if it goes through, delivery rates will have increased 49 percent," he said.

Scar also said that if the rate increase is approved, ComEd will be guaranteed a profit of more than $800 million next year.
