CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Court filings by federal prosecutors reveal that a confidant of former House Speaker Michael Madigan was interviewed by the feds long before the cases against Madigan And ComEd went public.
The filings indicate Michael McClain was interviewed by FBI Agents twice, in 2014 and 2016. The first, was five years before the case against Madigan went public.
The former ComEd lobbyist and friend of Madigan, the Chicago Tribune reported, was asked about his use of code names for Madigan such as “our friend,” “a friend” and “friend.” The filing said he admitted “you never know who’s listening.”
The 2014 interview occurred at the same time that Madigan was secretly recorded discussing property tax business with a Chinatown developer, which is at the heart of the indictment against Madigan and McClain.
The revelation about the FBI interviews comes less than two weeks before McClain is set to go on trial with three others, the so-called “ComEd Four”, on bribery conspiracy charges related to the utility’s alleged attempts to illegally influence Madigan.
His trial is set for next year.
