CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago-area commuters struggled Tuesday morning after a snowstorm dumped nearly 18 inches of snow on some parts of the city.

On Chicago expressways, police responded to at least six crashes Tuesday morning after 4 a.m., according to Illinois State Police. Three of the crashes had injuries.

The Kennedy Expressway express lanes remained closed because the entry gates couldn’t open in the snow, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Crews were expected to clear the gates later Tuesday.

CTA Disruptions

The CTA Purple and Yellow lines remained suspended at 10 a.m. due to track switching problems at Howard.

The problems were first reported at 5 a.m.

Red Line trains were running with major delays following a switching problem, also at Howard. Service had been suspended between Belmont and Howard.

“Because of overnight weather conditions, CTA is experiencing some service issues on the rail system, including switching issues at Howard and Midway stations which are impacting the movement of trains. CTA personnel are working to restore regular service as soon as possible. Free shuttle buses are providing connecting service to customers in the affected area," the CTA said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Blue Line service was suspended on the West Side due to a death at the Pulaski Station. Officers responded at about 5:30 a.m. to altercation and found the woman lying on the tracks, police said.

Witnesses told officers the woman jumped on the tracks after an altercation with a person, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
