CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The process to build the first casino in Chicago has taken a major step forward. However, there are many steps to go.

The Gaming Board has received the casino application from Bally’s.

It's a big step, with others still to come, including the okay from the planning department and overcoming opposition by the River North Residents Association, representing 23,000 people living near the site.

They have a number of complaints, including the density of the area. The timeline may be ambitious, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The company would like to have a temporary casino operating by next summer at the Medina Temple.

That would require quick work by the gaming board. The permanent casino is expected to open in about four years-an entertainment complex with a price tag of $1.7 billion dollars.
