A man is recovering after being bitten by a pit bull during a robbery in South Shore yesterday morning.
The 30-year-old was trying to get into his car parked near 67th and Jeffrey at around 4:30 a.m. when police say two men approached with a pit bull and released the dog, which began attacking him. The men took the victim’s keys and wallet as the dog bit him in the arm and legs. CBS 2 spoke to dog trainer Daniel McElroy about what you should do in a situation like that.
"The best way to protect yourself: interlace your fingers together, put him behind your neck and roll into a ball and protect your more vital areas," McElroy said.
McElroy says the dog was likely doing what it had been told to, not out of fear.
"Dogs that bite you just because they are scared are going to bite you and then give space. They want distance," he said.
Police say the man took himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition. Area one detectives are investigating.
