(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 62-year-old Lake Barrington man with a revoked Firearm Owners Identification Card shot himself while having a nightmare, authorities say, and now he faces felony gun charges.

“Truly a bizarre incident,” says Chris Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened the night of April 20, when deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the 100 block of Shoreline Road. They found Mark M. Dicara with a bullet wound to the leg and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, officials said.

An investigation revealed that Dicara was having a dream that someone was breaking into his home.

“He apparently kept a loaded revolver right next to his bed on a night stand," Covelli tells WBBM Newsradio. "He picked that revolver up and he fired a round, believing that he was firing at an intruder in his home. However, there was no intruder. It was a dream. And when he shot the gun, he shot himself in the leg.”

The bullet lodged itself in Dicara’s bedding and, fortunately, not through a shared wall leading to the neighbors’ residence, police said.

Dicara was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The gunshot victim, it turns out, had a revoked FOID card and should not have been in possession of a firearm, according to sheriff’s office.

Dicara was charged with possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and reckless discharge of a firearm, both felonies, authorities said. Dicara was arrested Monday and posted $150,000 bond to be released.

His next court appearance is set for June 29.
