(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Lake County authorities say a Grayslake man who is believed to have tried to make himself look like a victim is now charged with murdering his boyfriend.

It was Monday afternoon when Round Lake Beach police were called to a home and found a man with multiple lacerations. The man told them the offender was inside, police said.

In the garage, officers found the body of a man who’d been stabbed multiple times.

On Wednesday, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said the first man police encountered — 29-year-old Jesus Vargas — had stabbed and killed 37-year-old Brian Mahdee. Vargas allegedly cut himself; he was treated for wounds that weren’t life-threatening.

"A witness at the scene said the victim was unarmed and was stabbed by Vargas multiple times. After stabbing the victim, a witness observed Vargas cut himself multiple times," a news release said.

Authorities say Vargas and Mahdee were in a romantic relationship and had an argument.

Vargas is charged with first-degree murder. No further information was available.
