(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 39-year-old Bensenville man who crashed his car into a home after a high-speed chase last month is being held on $750,000 bond, officials said.

Jose Guzman allegedly refused to pull over early April 2 after Bensenville police observed him committing “multiple traffic violations,” the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Instead, Guzman led officers on a high-speed chase through residential areas, going more than 90 miles an hour, officials said. His vehicle went airborne and he allegedly crashed into a Wood Dale home, with his car passing through the garage and kitchen before stopping near the back of the house.

Guzman then escaped on foot through the back of the house, but he was apprehended April 6 on unrelated charges, officials said. For the chase and crash, he faces charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding and various traffic offenses.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said the episode involving Guzman is just the latest example of a motorist trying to evade police by speeding away.

“I have been sounding the alarm on this epidemic of fleeing and eluding for quite some time that sooner or later our luck is going to run out,” Berlin said in a news release. “This surge of motorists fleeing from police must end before someone gets killed.

He said Guzman caused more than $100,000 in damages to the home he allegedly crashed into; the owners were displaced.
