(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago man was sentenced to 16 years in prison Monday for killing a bicyclist in a hit-and-run incident in the western suburbs.
Prosecutors say Norris Watt on Nov. 15, 2020 was driving westbound on Roosevelt Road at more than 80 mph when he struck 40-year-old Troy Young near Steward Avenue and fled the scene.
Lombard police officers found Young, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a mangled bicycle. Oak Brook police stopped Watt’s vehicle and took him into custody, authorities said.
An investigation revealed Watt had a combination of alcohol, ecstasy, amphetamine and cannabis in his system at the time of the crash, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
Watt pleaded guilty to one count of failure to report a fatal accident and one count of aggravated DUI causing death, both felonies, before a judge issued the 16-year sentence.
“With a cocktail of drugs and alcohol in his system, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Mr. Watt should have been operating a motor vehicle,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a prepared statement.
