A man is hospitalized after being stabbed last night at a CTA L stop. This is the latest victim as police and the transit agency try to improve safety for riders.
It’s the fourth time in as many days that police responded to a violent incident at a CTA stop.
This one was at Roosevelt and State. It was just after 6 pm, according to police, that a 30-year-old man was involved in a fight with a group of about five young men or teenagers inside the station.
It’s unclear if this was a robbery attempt. Police say it spilled outside and the guys were kicking and punching the man on the ground and one of them stabbed him in the chest.
A fire department ambulance took him to Mercy Hospital in fair condition. Police say they caught the attackers near 35th and State. It appears they had taken a train south and got off near police headquarters where they were arrested.
Many incidents that occur at CTA stops are captured by high-definition surveillance cameras. It’s not known if that’s the case in this situation.
Police initially reported that one person stabbed the man in the chest, then the fight moved outside as the group continued to punch and kick the man on the ground, but a review of surveillance footage found the fight started inside the mezzanine, but the man was not stabbed inside the station or on CTA property, police said.
He was taken to Mercy Hospital in fair condition, police said.
The attackers fled and were taken into custody near the 100 block of East 35th Street, police said. Charges are pending.
