CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cordero Supe won $40,000 at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines but when he stepped outside early Tuesday morning, he was robbed at gunpoint.
“I was attacked by two young men in a blue, four-door sedan,” Supe told CBS 2. “They hopped out in the middle of the parking lot with a gun and told me to give them everything.”
Supe said he believes he was targeted, saying a young woman had been watching him inside the casino for more than an hour and likely tipped off the robbers.
“She knew exactly how much I had to the T and the way that the gentleman approached me [in the parking lot], he kinda was saying the certain amount of money, so it looked real suspicious,” Supe said.
The suspects got away with his cash, his iPhone and keys to his cousin’s car.
The Des Plaines Police Department confirmedthe robbers fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle and officials are now investigating.
While he’s not happy about losing $40,000, Supe is more upset that Rivers Casino security didn’t intervene.
"I felt like Rivers would’ve protected me. I am a black card member who spends hundreds of thousands of dollars up here. I had to run back inside to tell them what happened,” he said.
Rivers Casino Des Plaines issued the following statement:
“We appreciate the rapid response of our first responders, and we immediately provided the property’s robust surveillance footage to law enforcement agencies to assist in their investigation.
“The safety and security of guests and team members is Rivers’ top priority. Given the environment, Rivers has indefinitely increased exterior security patrols 24/7 as part of a property-wide enhancement of additional security and surveillance measures.”
