(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A former Homewood resident faces federal fraud charges alleging that he filed several false unemployment claims and took money meant for workers displaced by COVID-19.
Twenty-seven-year-old Robert Carter is accused of filing for unemployment benefits in states where he’s never lived, getting debit cards and making multiple withdrawals from ATMs.
The federal government said Carter even bragged in messages on Instagram about what he was doing, saying, “Withdrawing 14k a day off unemployment” and “Got 16 cards with 15k on each one.”
Last August, authorities said, he sent the message: “Let’s do some fraud I’ll help you.”
Carter currently lives outside Illinois.
