BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Buffalo Grove police say Thursday morning’s police shooting and killing of a man was believed to have been the first time police used their weapons on anyone in the village’s history.

Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens said 911 dispatchers received a call around 12:30 a.m. reporting a man with two guns near Mill Creek Park and that the man was dangerous and crazy.

When asked by the dispatcher who the gunman was, the caller stated, 'Well, that would be me," Casstevens said.

The 911 dispatcher asked the man several times to drop the weapons but that the man refused and then fired shots into the air when the officers arrived, Casstevens said.

"After those shots, the officers continued to order him to stop, but he refused. One officer fired shots that missed and another officer fired shots which did strike him."

Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Mike Szos said the incident could have been a possible case of suicide by cop. "They provided immediate first aid and, unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene," he said.

Casstevens offered condolences to the man’s family, but he said he believes the officers acted properly.

Neither officer was injured. There is squad car dash cam video and audio but no police body cam video because Buffalo Grove doesn’t yet have it, according to Casstevens.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident.
