(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 43-year-old Chicago man is charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty after he allegedly threw a dog to its death from an elevated CTA platform onto the concrete alley below early Thursday.

Demetrice Spencer was arrested around 1:45 a.m. following the incident at the Paulina Brown Line station in the Lake View neighborhood, police said.

Details were not immediately available, but CWB Chicago reported that Spencer called 9-1-1 around 1:30 a.m. from a gas station in the 2800 block of North Ashland Avenue and asked to be arrested. Around this time, a passerby told emergency dispatchers about a dead dog with a leash around its neck under the train platform, the website reported.

Spencer was expected to appear in court Friday on the felony charge.
