More than three-quarters of Illinois counties are now considered areas of "high" or "substantial" transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the Chicago area, DuPage and McHenry counties are now on the "substantial transmission" list, joining Will County. That means masks are suggested indoors in those counties, even for those who are vaccinated.
State health officials on Wednesday reported 2,082 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19, the highest one-day total since early May. Earlier this month, Illinois was averaging about 294 cases per day. Over the past week, that daily average has grown to 1,587 cases.
The case positivity rate -- a seven-day average of 4% -- is also the highest it's been since mid-April.
