CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot and Chicago’s top school official agree something must be done about the gun violence in the city that has left another child dead.
Asked about Sunday's shooting death of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams, Chicago Public Schools CEO Janice Jackson said she felt like a broken record talking about yet another child gunned down.
"The Jaslyn situation was particularly heartbreaking for me, because you know when I heard that she was going to McDonald's with her father, I just thought about what that felt like to me as a kid. That was like always a big deal," Jackson said.
"I can only imagine the heartbreak. I am still sick of our kids not feeling safe in this city, even doing something as normal and regular."
Joining Jackson for a high school visit, Mayor Lori Lightfoot blamed much of the violence on the easy availability of guns from neighboring states, like Indiana.
"Talk about the person who shot people at the FedEx, right? This is a guy whose mother said shouldn't have a gun, because he had mental health problems, and yet they took one gun and he went out and bought two more," she said.
Mayor Lightfoot told reporters Chicago Police are doing what they can for combat the violence, but there are too many guns on the streets.
"Yes, I am very satisfied in what our police superintendent and the police department are doing in an impossible environment where we have got to have help, and it starts with background checks, not allowing people who can't fly on planes to actually get guns, and banning assault weapons for starters," she said.
And those actions, she said, must come from Congress.
