CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lightfoot is reminding CTA workers to follow safety protocols after a customer service assistant was charged with attempted murder this weekend.
“Call police or the control room,” the mayor advised transit workers when asked about the shooting at the 95th street red line station Saturday morning.
Prosecutors say 53-year-old Sylvester Adams fired several shots at a man as he was walking away from the CTA employee following a confrontation.
“That is not the role of CTA personnel of any type and certainly not those that are front facing in the various stations or on the buses,” said Lightfoot.
The mayor said Adams violated protocols by bringing a gun to work, a move she insisted makes no sense.
Faced with rising violent crime on the CTA, the city announced earlier this month it’s doubling the number of unarmed security guards and reassigning police officers to patrol the transit system.
In a court hearing where a judge denied bond, prosecutors said the unarmed and intoxicated man threatened Adams and another worker, then argued with passengers before Adams confronted him.
The 37-year-old man is expected to recover from his gunshot wounds.
