(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A month after launching its so-called "Chicago Moves" program, the Lightfoot Administration is offering the latest figures on the number of prepaid gasoline cards and transit cards that have been awarded to local residents.
Ten thousand residents will receive gas cards worth $150 each, while 25,000 residents will get transit cards, a news release said.
City officials said 90,000 people have applied for the assistance, as gasoline prices have skyrocketed.
"The robust response to our Chicago Moves program demonstrates the vast need for this kind of assistance," Lightfoot said in a news release.
The city is spending $12.5 million on the transportation relief program, but critics say it’s an effort rooted in politics as Lightfoot runs for a second term in a crowded field. One of her declared opponents, philanthropist Willie Wilson, has given away millions in free or reduced-price gasoline.
Selected participants in the Lightfoot program have the choice to receive their card through the mail or to pick it up from a designated location.
The next round of recipients will be selected during a lottery scheduled in the first week of July. To apply, go to chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves.
