CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — City officials are in the hot seat again after another violent holiday weekend in Chicago.

At least 104 people were shot and 17 were killed in Chicago since Friday evening.

On Tuesday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot addressed the latest figures. She said all resident have a duty to help make the city safer.

“We must rally around our neighbors who are living in areas of our city that are under siege from violence,” she said. “We can’t ignore them. We can’t forget them. We can’t just think, ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’ We all have a responsibility.”

Meantime, Police Supt. David Brown said the criticism for the city's gun violence epidemic should be pointed at judges — not Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, whose employees have been filing murder charges against violent offenders.

He noted more than 90 people charged with murder have been released on electronic monitoring by Cook County judges.

“The courts released (defendants) back into the community, creating an unsafe environment for all of us in the crowd, when retaliation occurs, when street justice occurs,” Brown said.

The city’s top cop said 244 guns were confiscated and 86 arrests were made over the holiday weekend by Chicago police.
