CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday said now is the time for action after a video of a wrongful police raid was made public.
Lightfoot, who spoke at a press conference on Monday, called the wrongful raid on Anjanette Young’s home traumatic and disturbing, saying she feels more motivated than ever.
“We will right the wrongs inflicted on Miss Young and the wrongs inflicted on many others like her," Lightfoot said.
Lightfoot told reporters the officers involved in the raid have been placed on administrative duty.
“Under the direction of Superintendent Brown, all the officers involved in the raid in Ms. Young's home have been taken off the street and placed on desk duty,” the mayor said.
The investigation is being conducted by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which Lightfoot said should conclude in an “expeditious way.”
"Frankly, there is no excuse that this matter has languished for a year without any significant movement on the part of COPA," she added.
In what she called a difficult but necessary step, Lightfoot also requested the resignation of Chicago’s top lawyer, Corporation Counsel Mark Flessner.
“It was necessary in order for us to be able to move forward, as a city, with a full faith and confidence of Chicago's residents and communities," Lightfoot said.
Celia Meza, Lightfoot’s counsel and senior Ethics Advisor, was appointed as acting corporation counsel for the city of Chicago.
"My charge to her was simple: lead with integrity and transparency. Make sure that all the lawyers and personnel in the department of law never forget, never forget that they serve the people,” Lightfoot said.
