(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- City records showed Chicago mayoral candidate Brandon Johnson fell way behind on paying his water bills -- an embarrassing revelation in the final days of a heated campaign.

Johnson, who reportedly makes more than $160,000 a year, racked up more than $3,000 in unpaid water bills and some parking-related fines and penalties. Records show this was after some eight months of not paying the city.

A reporter asked Johnson Friday how he could run the city’s finances when his own finances seem challenged. Johnson responded that he has a budget plan that will solve the city finance problems that his opponent, Paul Vallas, created.

Vallas was once a city budget director.

Later Friday, the city Department of Revenue said Johnson's past-due bills had all been paid.
