(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --  One political expert sees Chicago’s upcoming Mayoral runoff election as an example of the political divide across the Country – one that may teach us some lessons.

As the top vote-getters in Tuesday’s mayoral race, Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson are philosophical opposites, with Vallas, a former public administrator, leaning right and Johnson, a Cook County commissioner, to the left.

Political Science Professor Constance Mixon of Elmhurst University says it shows that the electorate is sharply divided.

In the past, she says, candidates in runoffs would step toward the middle after the initial contest. But Mixon says that kind of thinking has been turned on its head in recent years. With the electorate so divided, she says, some candidates just dig in their heels and play to their base.

And raises the question: Who will Chicago moderates, who make up most of the voting public, support? This election will provide the answer.
