CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A memorial service will held Thursday afternoon on the campus of the University of Chicago for “Dennis” Shaoxiong Zheng, the recent graduate who was shot and killed during a street robbery last week.

The memorial service follows a week of tributes, protests, community meetings, and promises that more is being done about safety in Hyde Park.

During the protest on the quad, which was attended by many international students, one person held a sign reading, “We came here to learn, not to die.”

Students chanted "We want safety."

University President Paul Alivisatos held a webinar outlining new safety measures. "Public safety has long been an absolute priority for the university and it is more critical than ever," he said. "Violence today is on the same scale as a public health crisis and requires a commensurate response."

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown promised more cameras, more police presence in the area and collaboration with the campus police as well.

"A more aggressive solution is to have officers permanently assigned of walking and patrolling in cars," he suggested.

However, some students and faculty want more to be done as many are fearful of just walking anywhere in Hyde Park.
