CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Metra hopes a new monthly pass lures commuters out of their car and back to the train.

The commuter railroad is offering what it calls a “super saver monthly pass” starting July 1.  It will allow passengers to ride anywhere on the Metra system for $100 dollars instead of the usual pricing structure that is determined by distance.

Communications Director Michael Gillis said the pass is aimed at people who go to the office two or three days out of the week.

“When we tried to figure out the price of this pass, we kind of looked at if you’re going in two days one week, three the days the next, you might be going in ten times a month,” Gillis reasoned.

Metra ridership is now at 40% of pre-pandemic levels and Gillis said  the pass is an appealing alternative to high gas prices..

“Gas prices are really high right now. It just seemed like it was an opportune time to kind of strike while the iron was hot, present people with sort of an irresistible alternative to the gas pump,” Gillis added.

The railroad will conduct a three month trial period for the super saver pass.
